Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF)

WHAT IS PLATELET-RICH FIBRIN (PRF)?

Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) is a cutting-edge regenerative treatment that harnesses the healing power of the patient’s own blood. Used in both medical and aesthetic procedures, PRF promotes natural tissue repair and regeneration. Unlike its predecessor, Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), PRF is created without the use of additives or anticoagulants. A small blood sample is gently spun in a centrifuge, separating out platelets, white blood cells, cytokines, and fibrin into a concentrated, fibrin-rich clot.

This fibrin matrix serves as a scaffold for the slow, sustained release of growth factors, enhancing the body’s ability to repair tissue, stimulate collagen production, promote hair growth, and accelerate wound healing. PRF's gradual release of growth factors makes it a more effective and long-lasting solution compared to PRP, which delivers a quicker, short-lived burst of healing activity.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PRP & PRF TREATMENTS?

Composition

  • PRP: A plasma solution with 3-5 times more platelets than normal blood, containing growth factors and plasma proteins that support tissue repair.

  • PRF: Includes platelets, growth factors, a fibrin matrix for slow release, and also retains white blood cells and stem cells, boosting the healing process further than PRP.

Preparation Method

  • PRP: Blood is spun at high speed in a centrifuge to separate platelets and plasma from other blood cells. Anticoagulants are added to prevent clotting.

  • PRF: Blood is spun at a slower speed, retaining more white blood cells and fibrin. No anticoagulants are used, allowing a natural fibrin clot to form.

Growth Factor Release

  • PRP: Growth factors are released quickly, leading to faster but shorter-term healing.

  • PRF: Growth factors are released slowly due to the fibrin matrix, providing more sustained healing over time.

Longevity

  • PRP: Delivers faster results but often requires more frequent treatments as the effects wear off more quickly.

  • PRF: Provides longer-lasting results, potentially reducing the need for frequent follow-up treatments.

Applications

  • PRP: Commonly used in cosmetic treatments for skin and hair, as well as sports medicine and orthopedic conditions.

  • PRF: Ideal for dental procedures, facial rejuvenation, wound healing, and other treatments requiring longer-term healing.

WHAT ARE THE USES AND BENEFITS?

 Hair Restoration

  • Stimulates hair follicles promoting growth and density.

  • Increases hair count and thickness, extends growth phase.

  • Benefits: Non-surgical, no downtime, reduces shedding, promotes regrowth.

  • Ideal for: Androgenic alopecia (hair loss) in men and women.

Skin Rejuvenation

  • Boosts collagen production, improving skin texture and elasticity.

  • Reduces wrinkles, scars, and signs of aging

  • Benefits: Hydrates, smooths, and brightens skin naturally without fillers.

  • Targets: Under-eye circles, neck, cheeks, and hands.

Wound Healing

  • Promotes tissue regeneration, accelerates healing, reduces inflammation.

  • Benefits: Faster recovery, minimal scarring, reduced infection risk.

  • Used for: Chronic wounds, diabetic ulcers, post-surgical healing.

Dental & Bone Growth

  • Enhances bone regeneration,  aids implant integration.

  • Benefits: Faster recovery, reduces need for bone grafts, less pain and inflammation.

  • Ideal for: Dental implants, bone grafting, maxillofacial surgeries.

 Intimate Area Treatments

  • Improves blood flow and tissue regeneration for better function.

  • Benefits: Enhanced sexual satisfaction, non-invasive, long-lasting results.

  • Used for: Erectile dysfunction, vaginal laxity, lubrication, incontinence.

Joint Repair & Pain Relief

  • Stimulates tissue repair, reduces inflammation, regenerates cartilage.

  • Benefits: Pain relief, improved mobility, delays need for surgery.

  • Treats: Osteoarthritis, tendonitis, ligament injuries.

ADVANTAGES OF PRF OVER OTHER TREATMENTS

  • Natural and Safe: PRF is made from the patient's own blood, with no synthetic additives, reducing the risk of allergic reactions or infections.

  • Sustained Healing: PRF offers a slower, longer release of growth factors compared to PRP, promoting more effective and prolonged healing.

  • Enhanced Regeneration: Rich in platelets, growth factors, white blood cells, and stem cells, PRF boosts tissue regeneration.

  • Versatile Applications: Used in various fields including cosmetics, dermatology, dentistry, orthopaedics, and intimate health.

  • Minimally Invasive: PRF treatments are injection-based, offering a gentle approach with minimal recovery time.

SIDE EFFECTS AND SAFETY

PRF offers excellent safety because it is derived from the patient’s own blood, eliminating the risk of allergic reactions, rejection, or disease transmission. The absence of additives or anticoagulants reduces complications associated with traditional treatments like PRP. Side effects are rare and typically limited to mild swelling, bruising, or discomfort at the injection site, all of which resolve within days.

PRF is a powerful natural regenerative treatment with diverse applications in medicine and aesthetics. It effectively stimulates tissue regeneration, accelerates healing, and enhances overall wellness, making it ideal for hair restoration, skin rejuvenation, wound healing, dental surgery, intimate health, and joint repair. Its safety, versatility, and minimal side effects make it a preferred choice for patients seeking non-surgical, biocompatible solutions.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A PRF TREATMENT?

Standards and protocols for how best to prepare PRF for skin and hair rejuvenation are still being developed, but the process typically looks something like this:

  1. You’ll be given a numbing cream to help make your treatment more comfortable.

  2. Then your blood is drawn from your arm.

  3. The vial of blood is placed in a centrifuge, where it’s slowly spun for between three and 10 minutes, depending on the clinician’s approach.

  4. The centrifuge will separate your blood into three components: platelet-poor plasma at the top of the vial, red blood cells at the bottom of the tube, and, in the middle, platelet-rich fibrin.

  5. Once the PRF is collected and processed, your clinician will inject it into the desired treatment area or apply it topically, following a cosmetic procedure like microneedling.

HOW MANY PRF TREATMENTS ARE NEEDED?

For facial treatments, a series of three sessions is recommended, spaced four to six weeks apart for the best results. Following this initial series, your provider may suggest one to two treatments per year to help maintain your results.

For hair loss, anticipate needing approximately four to six monthly sessions, followed by two or three maintenance treatments each year.
